Your Guide to Mendocino Mountain Biking
Mendocino Woodlands State Park
Situated in the middle of a lush, green forest, Mendocino Woodlands State Park will make you feel like you’ve been transported to another world. This 720-acre park has various mountain biking trails that travel through Tan Oak, Douglas Fir, Madrone, and Redwood trees, and you’ll come across various bridges, creeks, and other cross-country obstacles throughout your journey. Keep your eyes peeled for curious wildlife including river otters, deer, fox, and beavers.
Mendocino Headlands State Park
One of the most popular Mendocino trails, the Big River Trail offers an easy ride through Mendocino Headlands State Park and follows a gently rolling course alongside the majestic river. Once an old logging road, this trail winds eight miles through redwoods and blackberry bushes and features breathtaking sights along the way. You’ll pass an abandoned quarry, a small laguna that’s home to wood ducks and blue herons, and will eventually end up at Big River, a mint-colored estuary that flows for miles. Be sure to bring your camera to snap a few photos!
Mendocino National Forest
Mendocino National Forest is comprised of one million acres of wilderness areas, lakes, rivers, and hot springs and features over 100 miles of trails for cyclists to enjoy. Advanced riders will love the Hell Hole Trail, a strenuous, 3.5-mile trek that challenges bikers with winding, tight-turning curves through grassy glades and woodlands. Or, for an easier route, take the scenic Letts Lake Loop Trail which offers a high-elevation ride through conifer/oak forest with picnic spots along the way. The trail follows level roads that are well marked and easy to follow, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
