Have an Adventure on the Fern Canyon Trail

Nestled in the picturesque Van Damme State Park in Northern California, a natural wonder known as the Fern Canyon Trail attracts outdoor enthusiasts from far and wide. The hike is about 5 miles round-trip and winds along the bottom of a canyon filled with vibrant green ferns and gigantic redwoods. While traversing various walking bridges and paths covered in pine needles, visitors can experience pockets of wild rhododendron and the mild scent of Christmas trees. Totally devoid of motor vehicles, this lush, shady forest and all of its magical features offers the perfect outing for families, couples, and anyone seeking a serene experience with nature.

Explore the Fern Canyon Trail

On your next trip to the coast, be sure to book your stay at the Inns of Glendeven for easy access to the trail. Our gorgeous Mendocino bed and breakfast is surrounded on three sides by the State Park, so you can start your adventure right off our grounds! Here are some of the best ways to journey through the Fern Canyon Trail.

Hiking & Biking

A stroll through Fern Canyon will take you to the heart of the park’s skyscraping redwoods. Along the way, you’ll see tons of different species of plants including lady, licorice, stamp, sword, deer, five-finger, and bird’s foot ferns. Multiple walking bridges provide a spectacular view of the river, and if the season is right, you may even see wild salmon swimming upstream to spawn. The paved trail is open year-round and is a fun and relaxing activity for hikers and bikers of all skill levels.

Visit the Pygmy Forest

Once you’re on the Fern Canyon Trail, you might want to walk an extra mile or two to check out Van Damme’s fascinating Pygmy Forest. Here, century-old cypress and pine trees range from 6 inches to 8 feet tall and have become strangely stunted due to nutrient-poor soil. The wetness of the soil restricts the growth of vegetation and induces a dwarf condition in many of the plants. Be sure to bring your camera!

Dress Comfortably

The climate in Mendocino is temperate year-round, with cool ocean breezes keeping average temperatures in the 60’s during the summer months. The winter daytime temps are usually in the 50’s to low 60’s, and winter rains usually burn off by mid-morning and provide the moisture necessary for the thriving coastal redwoods. Before you start your hike, prepare for changeable weather by dressing in light layers.

Make Your Way Back to the Inns of Glendeven

After a wonderful morning stroll or refreshing afternoon bike ride, treat yourself to some much-needed rest and relaxation at our luxurious inn. You can unwind with a selection of delicious local wine and hors d’oeuvres in our exclusive Wine Bar[n], or enjoy a private in-room massage to relieve those sore muscles. You’ll experience total comfort and pampering and can reminisce about the incredible sights and memories you made on your trip!
